Blog Post #2: Who is Jesus to me?

1. Prior to this class, what did you already know about Jesus and where did this information come from?

Prior to this class, I already knew that Jesus was the son of God and he spread the word of God. He died for our sins and preformed many miracles. Everything I know about Jesus is because of my middle school education. I went to Saint Catherine of Siena school and we had religion class everyday. I started learning about Jesus and God in kindergarten. I even had a prayer corner.

2. What new insights did you gain about Jesus from this unit? How does this change or confirm what you already thought? Be specific. (Based on presentations and reading)

I gained more knowledge about Jesus throughout this unit. I learned that he was called many different names and the bible lists a lot of them. I also learned that he was the main focus in a lot of the bible stories. One of the stories really intrigued me. The Wine at Cana talked about how Jesus performed his first miracle by turning water into wine at a wedding. The story I reported on was the Reign of Herod and the Slaughter of the Innocents. After the birth of Christ, he was hunted down by King Herod. There was chaos throughout the town and Herod was terrified that Jesus was going to take his place in power. These stories are mainly focused around Jesus and the power he carried with him. The picture below relates to this question because Jesus' story was mainly told in the Bible.

3. Do you feel that you see Jesus as more of a spiritual figure, a historical figure, and/or both? Why?

I saw Jesus as more of a spiritual figure. I never really made a connection with history and the Bible until this semester. I was always taught the spiritual version of the story. Just this year I began to realize that Jesus could have walked this Earth and some of the events in the Bible could be true. I have always believed in God but I always thought that the Bible was only telling stories for educational purposes. Now I believe that some of the stories are historical events. So therefore, Jesus can also be referred to as a historical figure.

4. How would you describe your relationship with Jesus?

I would describe my relationship with Jesus in many ways. In the past I would say that it was pretty weak. I hadn't really believed in all the stories and just thought that it was very far fetched. I'm more of a realistic person and I would need some solid proof to believe something. But now that I have learned that some of these stories could be real-life events, my faith has grown stronger. I have always believed in God and a higher power but now I have a stronger belief in the scriptures and stories. The picture below relates because it is a picture of Jesus and how he may have looked while he was on Earth.
