Blog Post #1: Bible Archaeology

1. What are some new things that you learned about Jesus from your own group presentation? Be specific.

My group presented the story of The Slaughter of the Innocence. I have never really learned about it before so all of it was relatively new. I knew that they holy family had to flee Bethlehem due to a hunt for Jesus but I never knew that the soldiers went around slaughtering babies. I learned how history and religious stories contradict information so people that are learning about the events are left guessing. I also learned that Joseph was warned, by an angel, that the soldiers were coming to hunt down Jesus. I faintly remember this story from middle school religion class. I chose the image below to give the reader a better understanding of the setting.

2. What are some new things that you learned about Jesus from your classmates’ group presentations? Be specific.

I had originally learned about Pontius Pilate and knew a good amount about him. Through my classmates presentation I learned a lot more about his background and how he was raised into power. He gained power through his friend. His friend got him a job. I already knew that he was  a harsh ruler and that he decided Jesus' fate. I also learned about how he told the crowd that Jesus' blood is on their hands, not his. Pilate knew that Jesus was innocent.

3. Which topic related to Jesus’ life did you find to be most fascinating and why?

The topic I find so interesting is the fact that Jesus died for our sins. I've known this since kindergarten but I have always been in awe. I can't believe that someone could be that selfless. He was tortured and outcasted due to his dedication to God. God told Jesus he was going to die and he was more than willing to. Jesus wasn't looking for a reward or to be credited. He died because he loved us and wanted to save us.

4. After reflecting on Jesus’ characteristics in the last unit and the events related to his life in this unit, who are two people in your life who display similar qualities as Jesus and why?

One person that displays qualities of Jesus is my mother. She does so much for me and has given up a lot just to take care of me. She went through medical school to become a Labor and Delivery nurse when I was really little. Instead of being with me as a baby everyday, she dedicated her time to making money and supporting our family. I could imagine being a single mother with an only child is really difficult. She would give her life for me, just like Jesus did. My second person is my grandma. My grandma gives so much of her time to my family. I go to my grandma's house every day after school. She picks me up from school and drives me to and from practice. She took care of me everyday while my mom was at medical school. She also took care of me while my mom started her job. I would spend the night at her house every night while my mom was taking night shifts. My grandma shares the quality of selfishness and love in this way. The picture below is of my mother and I.
